Owned, operated and maintained by Crabble Corn
Mill Trust, the mill was rescued from demolition and opened to the
public in 1990. It can now boast to be one of the most complete
and working examples of a Georgian watermill in Europe.
Crabble Corn Mill would like to thank all those
who sponsored or otherwise supported the 4th Annual Beer Festival
over the 2008 late May Bank Holiday. Without your help the
Festival could not have taken place and the Trust would hope that
all those who enjoyed sampling the fine selection of beers and ciders
will return in 2009 and bring all their friends with them.
The
current structure was built in 1812 alongside an existing mill which
was later demolished to allow for additional storage space - what
is now the exhibition area on the ground floor and the tea rooms.
However, records show that there has been a mill on this site since
at least 1227 when Henry III granted a Charter of Confirmation to
St. Radigund's Abbey, the ruins of which can still be seen today
on the hill above the village.
The
Mill is a working museum and as such shows Georgian and Victorian
engineering excellence at work using one of natures most powerful
forces - water. In 1999 the Mill won the prestigious Presidents
Award from the Association for Industrial Archaeology. Six floors
of exhibits and milling machinery describe the process of turning
wheat into flour, and this organic wholemeal flour is available
for sale in the gift shop and the Farm Shop. The café, which is
also available for private functions, serves a variety of snacks
and meals and has a fully licensed bar serving a variety of beers,
cider, wines and spirits. There is no admission charge to
the café, although we hope you will take a tour of the Mill while
you are here.
Our Farm Shop is run by volunteers that will
give you a warm and friendly welcome. We aim to provide a selection
of quality farm foods locally produced including eggs and meat.
We also stock other locally sourced products such as plants, logs,
kindling, and wood chippings. Discounts available to Dover Loyalty
Scheme card holders and Friends of Crabble Corn Mill. The shop is
situated in the Miller's Cottage with easy access and parking. Open
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily except Monday.
Our
flour is milled in the traditional way using the original 19th Century
machinery which has been restored to full working order here at
Crabble Corn Mill. Visitors touring the Mill can see the machinery
working, powered by the flow of the River Dour; a sustainable and
eco-friendly energy supply.
